PARAMETERIZATION OF LAND SURFACE FLUXES FOR CLIMATE MODELLING

Objective

A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHYSICAL PROCESSES YIELDING THE HEAT FLUXES OBSERVED OVER HETEROGENEOUS MEDIA AND THEREFORE TO A BETTER PARAMETRIZATION OF THESE FLUXES AT MESO-SCALE, INCLUDING IF POSSIBLE PARAMETERS MEASURABLE FROM SATELLITES.
THE DERIVATION AND IMPROVEMENT OF WELL VALIDATED METHODS OF MEASUREMENT OF THESE FLUXES AT THE APPROPRIATE SCALES.

EXPERIMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED IN ORDER :

I.TO MEASURE RADIANCE, HEAT, WATER AND MOMENTUM FLUXES OVER DIFFERENT SURFACE TYPES;
II.TO RELATE LOCAL MEASUREMENTS (REPRESENTATIVE OF SMALL PLOTS) TO NON-LOCAL MEASUREMENTS, SUCH A EDDY CORRELATION MEASURED BY AIRCRAFT OR RADIANCE FLUXES MEASURED BY SATELLITES, AND
III.TO CHARACTERISE THE SRUCTURE OF THE LAND SURFACE IN SIMPLE, QUANTITATIVE TERMS, SUCH AS DENSITY AND HEIFGT OG VEGETATION, ROUGHNESS LENGTH, SURFACE SLOPE AND EXPOSURE.

THE DUTCH CONTRIBUTION CONSISTS OF
A.PARTICIPATION TO THE JOINT FIELD EXPERIMENT IN CRAU, FRANCE, IN JUNE 1987,
B.PROCESSING THE COLLECTED DATA; BRINGING THESE ON MAGNETIC TAPES IN A STANDARD FORMAT,
C.VERIFICATION OF (EXISTING) METHODS.
FOR THE FIRST TWO YEARS WE WILL CONFINE OURSELVES TO IRREGULARITIES AT THE SURFACE WHICH ARE SO SMALL (10-1000M.) THAT THESE DO NOT EFFECT THE DYNAMICS OF THE PLANETARY BOUNDARY LAYER (PLB). IN A LATER STAGE, THE DUTCH GROUP WILL CONTRIBUTE ALSO TO THE PROBLEM OF NON-UNIFORM TERRAIN WITH IRREGULARITIES ON A LARGER SCALE (BUT SMALLER THAN 100 KM.) THAT INFLUENCE THE DYNAMICS OF THE PBL.FOR THIS MODELS, E.G. A LARGE-EDDY PBL MODEL, ARE AVAILABLE.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
