PARAMETRISATION OF LAND SURFACE FLUXES FOR CLIMATE MODELLING

Objective

A. A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF THE PHYSICAL PROCESSES YIELDING THE HEAT FLUXES OBSERVED OVER HETEROGENEOUS MEDIA AND THEREFORE TO A BETTER PARAMETRIZATION OF THESE FLUXES AT MESO-SCALE, INCLUDING IF POSSIBLE PARAMETERS MEASURABLE FROM SATELLITES.
B. THE DERIVATION AND IMPROVEMENT OF WELL VALIDATED METHODS OF MEASUREMENT OF THESE FLUXES AT THE APPROPRIATE SCALES.

1. MODEL STUDIES
IN THIS DOMAIN, THE GSTS WILL USE AND IMPROVE ONE DIMENSIONAL NUMERICAL SIMULATION OF THE PLANERY BOUNDARY LAYER IN ORDER TO TAKE CARE OF THE HETEROGENEITY OF THE SURFACE.THESE MODELS SHOULD INCLUDE THE "MACROSCOPIC" PARAMETERS DESCRIBING THE SURFACE AND THE FLUXES AT THE RELEVANT SCALES.THE METHOD WILL CONSIST, IN A FIRST STEP, TO ANALYSE THE EFFECT OF THE RELEVANT MACROSCOPIC PARAMETERS (SUCH AS NVI, TEXTURAL CHARACTERISTICS, OVERALL TEMPERATURE, ETC...) ON THE FLUXES AT LARGE SCALE.A COMPLEMENTARY THEORITICAL APPROACH WILL BE UNDERTAKEN IN ORDER TO OBTAIN THE MACROSCOPIC EQUATIONS GOVERNING THE MACROSCOPIC FLUXES, STARTING FROM THE KNOWN RESULTS AT LOCAL SCALE.A FIRST APPROACH FOR THE GROUND FLUXES HAS BEEN GIVEN BY F.BECKER AND M.RAFFY (1986).

2. ANALYSIS OF GROUND AND SATELLITE MEASUREMENTS
- ANALYSIS OF THE VARIABILITY OF THE TEST SITE
- PREPROCESSING
- COHERENCE ANALYSIS AT LOCAL SCALE AND VALIDATION OF INVERSE MODELS
- EMBEDDING OF SCALES - AERIAL INTEGRATION
- PARTICIPATION TO THE INTERCOMPARISON OF DATA OBTAINED BY THE VARIOUS TEAMS
- CREATION OF A DATA BASE SYSTEM FOR THE VARIOUS EXPERIMENTS TAKING CARE IN THE FRAME OF THE PROJECT.

3. EXECUTION OF FIELD EXPERIMENTS WITH THE COLLABORATION OF INRA CLIMATOLOGY (AVIGNON)
- MEASUREMENTS OF MICROCLIMATOLOGY PARAMETERS AND FLUXES.
- MEASUREMENT OF PLANT CHARACTERISTIC AND MAINLY PLANT STOMATAL RESISTANCES WITH A DEVICE RECENTLY DEVELOPED FOR THIS PARTICULAR PURPOSE.
- MEASUREMENTS OF SPECTRAL EMISSIVITY USING THE EMISSIVITY-BOX METHOD WHICH WILL BE NORMALIZED IN THE LABORATORY.
