Objective
TO ASSESS THE CROP RESPONSE TO CLIMATIC FACTORS.
THE FEASIBILITY OF CROP MORPHOSENETIC MODELS HAS BEEN ALREADY WIDELY TESTED. THESE MODELS HAVE TO INCLUDE A DESCRIPTION OF TEMPERATURE, RADIATION AND PHOTOPERIOD EFFECTS ON THE RESULATION OF PLANT DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH. PHENOLOGICAL CHANGES CAN BE APPROACHED IN TERMS OF PHASIC FLOW AND MORPHOSENESIS HAS TO BE CONSIDERED THE RESULT OF AN INTERACTIVE CONTROL. IN THE PHASE 1 (1987-1988) OF THIS PROPOSAL WHEAT MORPHOSENETIC MODELS WILL BE APPROACHED.
EXPERIMENTAL WORK WILL BE PERFORMED BOTH FOR THE VALIDATION OF THEORETICAL MODELS AND FOR THE STUDY OF SOME NOT YET CLEARLY UNDERSTOOD ONTOSENETIC PROCESSES (E.G. CONTROL OPERATED BY PHOLOPERIOD, VERNALIZATION AND LOW TEMPERATURE INDUCTION ON DEVELOPMENT AND GROWTH RATES). VALIDATION EXPERIMENTS ARE PLANNED FOR THE ASSESSMENT OF PHOTOTHERMAL EFFECTS ON APEX DEVELOPMENT OF SOME COMMERCIAL WHEAT VARIETIES. THE POSSIBILITIES OF A PROCEDURAL STANDARDIZATION WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.
RESEARCH EXPERIMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED IN THE FIELD (AT THE EXPERIMENT STATION OF FLORENCE).THESE WILL INCLUDE DIFFERENT SHOWING DATES AND THE USE OF SPECIAL DEVICES TO CHANGE NATURAL DAYLENGHT. INTENSIVE FIELD WORK IS SCHEDULED FOR MEASUREMENT OF SOIL AND AIR TEMPERATURE EFFECTS ON LEAF EXTENSION RATES AND THEIR IMPLICATION IN CANOPY DEVELOPMENT. ARTIFICIALLY ILLUMINATED PLOTS WILL BE COMPARED FOR PRODUCTIVITY, EARLINESS AND MORPHOSENESIS. METEOROLOGICAL VARIABLES WILL BE MONITORED DURING THE WHOLE GROWING SEASON. THE RESULTS OF THE EXPERIMENTS WILL BE INCLUDED IN A GENERAL WHEAT GROWTH SIMULATOR.
FURTHER, SIMILAR ACTIVITY IS PLANNED IN THE PHASE 2 (1989-90) OF THE PROJECT WITH APPLICATION TO OTHER STRATEGIC CROPS. (MAIZE, SORSHUM, SUNFLOWER AND SOYABEAN).
