RECONSTRUCTION OF THE PAST MEDITERRANEAN CLIMATE IN THE HISTORICAL PERIOD

Objective

TO RECONSTRUCT CLIMATE OF HISTORICAL PERIOD.

THE PROJECT WILL COMPRISE THE FOLLOWING STAGES.

A. COLLECTION AND CRITICAL EVALUATION OF THE AVAILABLE DATA. THIS STAGE WILL INCLUDE AN ANALYSIS OF THE HISTORICAL RECORDS OF ATHENS, THESSALONIKI, KERKYRA (CORFU) ETC., TO UNDERTAKE A QUANTITATIVE EVALUATION OF CLIMATOLOGICAL PARAMETERS FROM DIFFERENT KINDS OF DATA.

B. RECONSTRUCTION OF THE CLIMATIC FLUCTUATIONS ON A MESOSCALE SPACE. THIS STAGE WILL INVOLVE THE ANALYSIS OF SERIES OF EXCEPTIONAL EVENTS AND CONTINUOUS DATA.
INVESTIGATION OF THE INFLUENCE OF MAJOR TOPOGRAPHIC FEATURES ON WEATHER PATTERNS WILL BE USED TO ASSIST IN RECONSTRUCTING PAST CLIMATIC PARAMETERS, E.G. PRESSURE, TEMPERATURE ETC.
SPECIAL ATTENTION WILL BE GIVEN TO THE INFLUENCE OF LARGE MOUNTAIN CHAINS AND SEA-SURFACE TEMPERATURE (SST). IN GREECE, THERE ARE SERIES OF SUCH DATA NOT YET FULLY VALIDATED AND EXPLOITED.

C. INVESTIGATION OF HISTORICAL SOURCES, I.E. DESCRIPTIONS OF EXTREME EVENTS FROM LITERARY SOURCES OR CHRONICHERS.

D. INVESTIGATION OF ARCHEOLOGICAL SOURCES AND MAYBE SEDIMENTARY SEQUENCES.

E. METEOROLOGICAL AND CLIMATOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION AND SEARCH FOR TELECONNECTIONS.

F. THE USE OF STATISTICAL METHODS TO ANALYZE THE DATA WITH STANDARD AND NON-STANDARD COMPUTER TECHNIQUES WILL ASSESS THE SENSITIVITY OF THE CLIMATIC SYSTEM TO FORCING PARAMETERS IN ORDER TO RECONSTRUCT THE PAST CLIMATE AND WILL PROVIDE SOME INDICATION OF FUTURE CLIMATIC DEVELOPMENT.
WE BELIEVE THAT THE RESULTS OF THE WORK WILL SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASE OUR KNOWLEDGE OF CLIMATIC TRENDS AND CHANGES IN THE MEDITERRANEAN REGION AND IN THE RISKS RELATED TO EXTREME EVENTS, WHICH ARE PARTICULARLY IMPORTANT FOR THE MEDITERRANEAN BASIN.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
