MODELLING CHANGES IN CLIMATE DUE TO ENHANCED CO2

Objective

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE PARAMETRIZATIONS OF CLOUD DISTRIBUTION AND CLOUD OPTICAL PROPERTIES WILL BE COMPLETED. SIMULATIONS OF PRESENT DAY CLIMATE WILL BE CARRIED OUT AND COMPARED WITH OBSERVATIONAL DATA, INCLUDING DATA FROM ISCCP. SIMULATIONS FROM THE VARIOUS MODELS AT THE MET OFFICE AND LMD WILL BE COMPARED, AND, WHERE POSSIBLE, THE DIFFERENCES IN THE SIMULATIONS WILL BE EXPLAINED IN TERMS OF THE MODEL USED. THE EMPHASIS WILL BE ON COMPARING CLOUD WATER, CLOUD COVER AND RADIATIVE FLUXES SIMULATED IN THE VARIOUS MODELS, THOUGH SOME COMPARISON OF THE LOW LEVEL FLOW AND THE SURFACE FLUXES OF HEAT, MOISTURE AND MOMENTUM IN SIMULATIONS WITH PRESCRIBED SSTS WILL BE MADE. IN PLANNING EXPERIMENTS, THE COMPABILITY OF DIAGNOSTICS FROM THE MET OFFICE AND LMD WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.

SIMULATIONS WITH ENHANCED CO2 WILL BE MADE WITH VARIOUS MODELS. THE RESPONSES OF THE MET OFFICE AND LMD MODELS TO ENHANCED CO2 WILL BE COMPARED. THE EMPHASIS WILL BE ON UNDERSTANDING THE MODELS' RESPONSES AND EXPLAINING THE DISCREPANCIES BETWEEN THE MODELS. IN PLANNING EXPERIMENTS, THE DIAGNOSTICS REQUIRED FOR PART C. BELOW WILL BE TAKEN INTO ACCOUNT.

FUTURE CO2 EXPERIMENTS INCLUDE :

1. SIMULATIONS WITH SST CHANGES DERIVED FROM LOW RESOLUTION MIXED LAYER EXPERIMENTS.
2. SIMULATIONS USING THE HIGHER RESOLUTION MODEL COUPLED TO A MIXED LAYER OCEAN.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
