Objective
TO UNDERSTAND THE FEEDBACKS IN THE CLIMATE SYSTEM : ATMOSPHERE, OCEAN, CRYOSPHERE.
THIS CONTRACT IS PART OF A JOINT PROGRAMME BETWEEN 6 LABORATORIES WHICH AIMS TO BUILD A TWO-DIMENSIONAL (ALTITUDE/LATITUDE) CLIMATE MODEL WHERE ATMOSPHERE, OCEAN, SEA AND LAND ICE ARE COUPLED AND WHERE A CO2 CYCLE IS INCLUDED.
THE RESEARCH WILL INCLUDE :
- SIMULATION OF THE DYNAMIC BEHAVIOUR OF THE CLIMATE VARIATIONS OVER THE LAST 150,000 YEARS IN RESPONSE TO CHANGING THE EARTH'S ORBITAL PARAMETERS WITH THE 2-D MODEL;
- THE TRANSIENT RESPONSE OF THE CLIMATE SYSTEM TO CO2 AND OTHER TRACE GASES INCREASE OVER THE NEXT CENTURY;
THESE WILL ALLOW :
- TO COMPARE THE EQUILIBRIUM RESPONSE OF SOME 3-D MODELS TO THE TRANSIENT INTEGRATION OF THE 2-D MODEL;
- TO ASSESS BOTH THE VALIDITY OF SNAPSHOT EXPERIMENTS USING COMPREHENSIVE 3-D MODELS AND THE IMPORTANCE OF THE PROCESSES NEGLECTED IN THE 2-D MODEL;
- TO STUDY THE SENSITIVITY OF THE MODELLED CLIMATE TO SOME SPECIFIC FEEDBACK MECHANISMS BETWEEN THE DIFFERENT PART OF THE CLIMATE SYSTEM;
- TO TRANSFER THE KNOW-HOW OBTAINED FROM 2-D EXPERIMENTS TO THE 3-D CLIMATE MODELS;
THIS RESEARCH WILL ALSO TRY TO SIMULATE IN AN INTERACTIVE WAY THE CO2 CYCLE WITHIN THE CLIMATE SYSTEM.
THE SPECIFIC CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE PROPOSER WILL BE THE DESIGN OF TWO ATMOSPHERIC MODELS, THEIR COUPLING WITH THE OCEANIC UPPER MIXED LAYER, THE SEA ICE AND THE ICE SHEETS AND THE MODELING OF THE DEEP SEA CIRCULATION.
