BIDIMENSIONAL MODEL OF THE CLIMATE SYSTEM

Objective

IMPROVEMENT OF ZONAL ICE SHEET MODEL.

THE IMOU ZONAL ICE SHEET MODEL, WHICH INCLUDES GEODYNAMICS AND THERMODYNAMICS, HAS BEEN USED IN SEVERAL STUDIES OF THE PLEISTOCENE GLACIAL CYCLES. THESE STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT LAND ICE DYNAMICS PLAY AN IMPORTANT ROLE. THIS MODEL WILL BE COUPLED TO ZONAL MODELS OF THE ATMOSPHERIC AND OCEANIC CIRCULATION. THE ROLE PLAYED BY SEA-ICE, THE ENTIRE HYDROLOGICAL CYCLE ETC., ON WHICH SO MUCH SPECULATION HAS BEEN GOING ON, WOULD THEN BE INVESTIGATED IN A PROPER WAY. USING ZONAL MODELS SEEMS TO BE A USEFUL INTERMEDIATE APPROACH BETWEEN THE VERY SIMPLE CLIMATE MODELS AND FULLY 3-D SIMULATIONS.

THE IMOU CONTRIBUTION WILL BE IMPROVEMENT OF THE ZONAL ICE-SHEET MODEL, AND HELP AND ADVISE BY ITS APPLICATION IN THE 'TOTAL' ZONAL CLIMATE MODEL.

THE IMPROVEMENT WILL IN PARTICULAR CONCERN :

- TREATMENT OF BASAL WATER AND ICE SLIDING VELOCITY
- PARAMETERIZATION OF THE MASS BALANCE.
