THE IMPACTS OF INCREASING CO2 AND CLIMATIC CHANGE ON EUROPEAN AGRICULTURE

Objective

THE TASKS ARE :

1) THE DEVELOPMENT OF SIMPLER AGROMETEOROLOGICAL MODELS TO ANALYSE SPECIFIC ASPECTS OF AGRICULTURAL RESPONSE (E.G. WATER-USE EFFICIENCY) TO CLIMATIC CHANGE AT VARIOUS SCALES, RANGING FROM THE PLANT TO THE FIELD LEVEL. THESE WILL BE DEVELOPED FROM AGRONOMIC, CROP-PHYSIOLOGICAL AND MICROMETEOROLOGICAL INFORMATION, AND WILL COMPLEMENT THE MORE COMPLEX SIMULATION MODELS OF TASK 1. OUTPUT FROM THE SIMULATION MODELS WILL PROVIDE DATA FOR DEVELOPMENT OF THE SIMPLER MODELS. A STRONG EMPHASIS WILL BE PLACED ON SIMPLE MECHANISTIC FUNCTIONS THAT ISOLATE THE RESPONSE OF CRITICAL ASPECTS OF PLANT GROWTH TO CRITICAL CLIMATE VARIABLES.

2) THE ASSESSMENT OF THE IMPACT OF THE INCREASING CO2 AND ASSOCIATED CLIMATE CHANGE ON EUROPEAN AGRICULTURE. THIS WILL BE BASED ON THE MODELS DEVELOPED IN CONJUNCTION WITH CLIMATE INFORMATION PROVIDED. RATHER THAN A PREDICTION OF IMPACT, A RANGE OF POSSIBLE OUTCOMES WILL BE PRODUCED WHICH REFLECT THE UNCERTAINTIES INHERENT IN CLIMATE FORECASTS, CROP-CLIMATE MODELS AND AGRICULTURAL ADJUSTMENT. THE MODEL ESTIMATES WILL INCLUDE THE DIRECT EFFECTS OF CO2 AS WELL AS CLIMATIC CHANGES. THE EFFECTS OF POSSIBLE CHANGES IN THE FREQUENCY OF CLIMATIC EXTREMES ON EUROPEAN AGRICULTURE WILL ALSO BE ASSESSED. FINALLY, THE POTENTIAL EFFECTS OF CHANGES IN BASIC MANAGEMENT PRACTICES WILL BE INVESTIGATED BY ALTERING MODEL PARAMETERS AND ASSUMPTIONS.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
