INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDY ON THE CARBON CYCLE

Objective

SIMULATION OF CARBON CYCLE AND CO2-CONCENTRATION IN THE ATMOSPHERE.

AT PRESENT THE FOLLOWING MODELS EXIST :
OBM : THE OSNABRUCK BIOSPHERE MODEL.
OCM : A THREE DIMENSIONAL OCEANIC CARBON CYCLE MODEL.
ATM : A THREE DIMENSIONAL ATMOSPHERIC TRANSPORT MODEL.

ATM WILL BE EXTENDED BY INCLUSION OF OBSERVED WINDFIELDS FROM THE ECMWF ANALYSES FOR THE ENTIRE PERIOD 1979-85. IN ADDITION, AN IMPROVED PARAMETRIZATION OF THE SUBGRIDSCALE VERTICAL CONVECTION AND OF THE PLANETARY BOUNDARY LAYER WILL BE INSTALLED. AS A TEST OF THE SHORT-TERM (DAYS TO SEVERAL WEEKS) TRANSPORT CHARACTERISTICS OF THE MODEL A SERIES OF SIMULATION EXPERIMENTS WITH CONTINENTAL TRACE GASES, SUCH AS RADIOACTIVE 222RN, WILL BE CONDUCTED. THE RESULTS WILL BE COMPARED WITH DATA OBTAINED, SELECTED AND INDIVIDUALLY ANALYZED IN TERMS OF ATMOSPHERIC TRANSPORT AT THE MONITORING STATION NETWORK OPERATED BY THE CFR IN THE FRENCH TAAF (TERRES AUSTRALES ET ANTARTIQUES FRANCAISES).
WE WOULD ALSO PARTICIPATE IN ESTIMATION OF THE WINDSTRESS AND THE GAS TRANSFER VELOCITY IN SPACE AND TIME BY USING THE FOLLOWING METHOD :
FROM CIRCULATION STATISTICS OF THE T21 CLIMATE GENERAL CIRCULATION MODEL OF THE HAMBURG UNIVERSITY; IN A SECOND STAGE DIRECTLY FROM SURFACE WINDS ESTIMATED FROM THE ANALYSES OF THE ECMWF.
