Objective
TO INVESTIGATE THE EFFECTS OF CLIMATE CHANGES ON VEGETATION AND LAND USE.
THE RESEARCH WOULD INVESTIGATE BY AS WIDE A RANGE OF METHODS AS POSSIBLE, THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE LANDSCAPE AND VEGETATION OF CRETE AND THE AEGEAN ISLANDS, LESROS. IN PARTICULAR, DURING THE KOLOCENE AND CURRENTLY, WITH PARTICULAR REFERENCE TO PROCESSES OF DESERTIFICATION. THE REMOTE SENSING STUDIES AND THE MONITORING OF DUST DEPOSITION WILL PROVIDE BASELINES FOR FUTURE REFERENCE. THE COSTS OF DRAUGHT AND DEGRADATION WILL ALSO BE CONSIDERED.
IN THIS PROJECT, STUDIES WILL INVOLVE :
A. METEOROLOGICAL STUDIES ON RAINFALL, TEMPERATURE, WIND, SETTING OF STATIONS, MEASURING OF SNOW COVER.
B. TREE RING CORES IN ORDER TO COMPARE RING THICKNESS WITH CLIMATIC RECORDS BACK INTO THE LAST CENTURY.
C. DUST SAMPLES FROM NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL TRAPS IN ORDER TO OBTAIN INFORMATION ON ITS SOURCE.
D. SEDIMENTARY CORES, NINE IN NUMBER, FOR RADIOCARBON TRACING, POLLEN ANALYSIS, MAGNETIC STRATIGRAPHY, DESERT DUST CHARACTERISTICS.
E. REMOTE SENSING IMAGERY WILL BE EMPLOYED TO PRODUCE MAPS AT DIFFERENT SCALES. RELIEF AND LAND USE MAPPING AS WELL AS PROVISION OF GEOGRAPHICAL DATA BASE. SEASONAL AND ANUAL VARIABILITY MAPPING AND QUANTIFYING ETC.
F. ECOLOGICAL HISTORIES OF CRETE AND LESROS. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO THE STUDY OF THE PLANT COMMUNITIES AND SOILS OF THE ISLANDS AT THE PRESENT TIME AND THE FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE AND CONTROL THEM.
G. A SCHEMATIC ECONOMIC ASSESSMENT WOULD BE ATTEMPTED OF THE COSTS OF DRAUGHT CONDITIONS TO THE ECONOMY.
