Objective
THIS PROJECT INVOLVES THE ANALYSIS OF SERIES OF BOTH EXCEPTIONAL EVENTS AND CONTINUOUS DATA (E.G. TREE RINGS), THEIR COMPARISON AND INTEGRATION. THE AMALGAMATION OF THE RELIABLE BUT DISCONTINUOUS HISTORICAL SERIES WITH CONTINUOUS WIDESPREAD TREE RING SERIES OFFERS THE POSSIBILITY OF A MORE COMPLETE CLIMATIC SCENARIO. THE RELATIONSHIPS WHICH CAN BE DEDUCED FROM THE COMPARISON OF TREE RING SERIES AND INSTRUMENTAL METEOROLOGICAL SERIES ENABLE THE RECONSTRUCTION OF PAST CLIMATE BEFORE THE INSTRUMENTAL PERIOD UP TO 1 KY BP. PARTICULAR ATTENTION WILL BE PAID TO SOME PERIODS LIKE THE OPTIMUM IN THE ROMAN AND MEDIOEVAL AGES AND THE LITTLE ICE AGE.
THE MAIN STEPS OF THIS INTERDISCIPLINARY PROJECT ARE:
-1) TO SEEK AND ANALYSE LONG INSTUMENTAL METEOROLOGICAL SERIES IN ITALY BEGINNING BETWEEN THE 18TH AND 19TH CENTURY (I.E. PADOVA, ROMA, MILANO, VENICE, TRIESTE, BOLOGNA AND OTHER SERIES ON THE ALPINE CHAIN);
-2) TO SEEK, VALIDATE AND INTERPRET HISTORICAL DATA OF SEVERE CLIMATOLOGICAL EVENTS, RELATED DISASTERS AND OTHER PROXY DATA IN ITALY (FLOODS AND FREEZINGS OF THE PO AND TIBER, HIGH WATER AT VENICE ETC.). SOME NOTE WILL BE MADE ON THE PALEOCLIMATE AS DEDUCED FROM ANCIENT WRITTEN SOURCES, I.E. LATIN AND GREEK LITERATURE AND ANCIENT NEAR EAST TEXTS (BIBLICAL SOURCES, CUNEIFORM TABLETS);
-3) TO ANALYSE LONG SERIES OF TREE RING (WOOD DENSITY, RING THICKNESS) OF DIFFERENT SPECIES: LARIX DECIDUA (925 AD - 1985 AD), PICEA ABIES (1415 AD - 1985 AD), TAXUS BACATA (1263 AD - 1704 AD AND 1483 AD - 1986 AD), QUERCUS SP. (2381 BP - 1112 BP) ETC., WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO THE PROBLEM OF DESERTIFICATION IN SOUTHERN EUROPE;
-4) MATHEMATICAL ANALYSIS OF THE DATA WITH STANDARD AND NON STANDARD COMPUTER TECHNIQUES; TO IDENTIFY PREDOMINANT TRENDS IN PRECIPITATION HISTORY IN MB, AS PRECIPITATION IS A VITAL ELEMENT IN THE PROFITABILITY OF AGRICULTURE AND DESERTIFICATION. THIS WILL IMPROVE KNOWLEDGE OF EXTREME CLIMATOLOGICAL EVENTS AND RELATED RISKS IN THIS REGION PARTICULARLY SENSITIVE TO METEOROLOGICAL AND CLIMATIC CHALLENGES.
-5) METEOROLOGICAL AND CLIMATOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION AND SEARCH FOR TELECONNECTIONS BETWEEN THE CLIMATE IN THE NORTHERN AND CENTRAL EUROPE AND IN THE MB.
