Objective
THE GENERAL OBJECTIVE IS TO TEST WHETHER THE AMBIENT CONCENTRATION OF ATMOSPHERIC POLLUTANTS IN IMPORTANT AGRICULTURE AREAS AFFECT CROP YIELD OR NOT.
THE HYPOTHESIS WILL BE TESTED BY MEANS OF OPEN-TOP CHAMBERS INSTALLED AT THE EXPERIMENTAL SITE AT TERVUREN (BELGIUM), REMOTE FROM INDUSTRIAL AREAS.
PLANTS, ESPECIALLY CEREALS AND LEGUMINOUS WILL BE GROWN IN A SET OF 5 OPEN-TOP CHAMBERS WITH FILTERED AIR. COMPARISONS WILL BE MADE WITH SIMILAR PLANTS GROWN IN 5 CHAMBERS WITH UNFILTERED ATMOSPHERES AND 5 ADJACENT FIELD PLOTS.
IN PRIORITY CROPS RECOMMENDED BY THE CEC WILL BE TESTED.
- AS AN INTRODUCTORY RESEARCH, SOME CLOVER SPECIES HAVE BEEN TESTED DURING THE WINTER-PERIOD 1986-1987. TRIFOLIUM PRATENSE, TRIFOLIUM INCARNATUM AND TRIFOLIUM FRAGIFERUM WERE CHOSEN.
- THE MAIN PROJECT WILL START IN MARCH 1987 BY SOWING SUMMER WHEAT. OTHER CROPS SUCH AS WINTER WHEAT, WINTER BARLEY AND FODDER MAIZE COULD ALSO BE INVESTIGATED.
- THE MEASUREMENTS OF SO2, NO AND NO2 WILL BE CARRIED OUT CONTINUOUSLY IN AND OUTSIDE THE CHAMBERS.IN ADDITION, AMBIENT FLUORIDES AND DRY DEPOSITION OF FLUORIDES AND CHLORIDES ON LIME PAPERS WILL BE MEASURED.
-THE MONITORING OF THE CLIMATE IN AND OUTSIDE THE CHAMBERS WILL BE CARRIED OUT AS WELL.
- BIOLOGICAL MEASUREMENTS NON-DESTRUCTIVE (THROUGHOUT THE WHOLE LIFE CYCLE) AS WELL AS DESTRUCTIVE (AT THE END OF THE GROWING PERIOD) WILL BE CARRIED OUT REGULARLY.
THE FOLLOWING ADDITIONAL EXPERIMENTS WILL BE PERFORMED :
. BIOLOGICAL OBSERVATIONS IN OTHER AREAS WITH A DIFFERENT POLLUTION LEVEL;
. INDICATOR PLANTS WILL BE USED FOR BIOLOGICAL MONITORING OF PHOTOCHEMICAL OXIDANTS AND OTHER AIR POLLUTANTS IN AMBIENT AIR.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
