INTERACTION OF OZONE, ACID MIST, WATER, AND NUTRIENT DEFICIENCY ON NORWAY SPRUCE

Objective

TO GENERATE SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION IN ORDER TO ELUCIDATE TO WHAT EXTENT ENVIRONMENTAL LIMITING FACTORS MODIFY THE PLANT RESPONSE TO AIR POLLUTANTS.

THE PROJECT WILL ASSESS, SINGLY AND IN COMBINATION, THE IMPACT OF
-AIR POLLUTANTS (03 ON A BACKGROUND OF SO2 AND NOX;ACID MIST)
-SOIL (SELECTIVE MG, K, AND CA DEFICIENCY), AND
-CLIMATE (WATER STRESS; FROST)
ON GROWTH, PHYSIOLOGICAL CAPABILITY, AND BIOCHEMICAL STATUS OF 4 YEAR OLD CLONAL NORWAY SPRUCE (PICEA ABIES (L.) KARST.).

THE PROPOSED GSF PROJECT CONSISTS OF TWO LONG-TERM EXPERIMENTS IN THE ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMBERS OF THE GSF (MUNICH/FRG). THE GSF EXPERIMENTS ARE COMPLEMENTED BY LONG-TERM EXPERIMENTS IN THE CERL SOLARDOMES (CERL, LEATHERHEAD/UK) AND THE OUTDOOR FUMIGATION SYSTEM AND COLD TREATMENT CHAMBERS OF THE DEPT. OF PLANT BIOLOGY, UNIVERSITY OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE/UK. ALL EXPERIMENTAL WORK AT THE THREE RESEARCH INSTITUTES WILL BE CARRIED OUT ON CLONAL NORWAY SPRUCE OF IDENTICAL ORIGIN (KAUFBEUREN/FRG) AND AGE (CLASS 0+1+4).

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.
