EFFECTS OF AIR POLLUTION ON HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND MONUMENTS AND THE SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR CONSERVATION.

Objetivo

TO INCREASING UNDERSTANDING OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND OF THE MECHANISMS RESPONSIBLE FOR THE DETERIORATION OF HISTORIC BUILDINGS AND MONUMENTS, AND TO HELP PROVIDE A SCIENTIFIC BASIS FOR CONSERVATION AND RESTORATION.

1) ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS AND DECAY RATES :

SAMPLES OD SANDSTONE, MARBLE, LIMESTONE ETC. ARE STUDIED IN THE FIELD AT VARIOUS LOCATIONS IN EUROPE AND IN ENVIRONMENTAL CHAMBERS.
THE RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DEPOSITION CHEMISTRY AND STONE DECAY, AND THE PROCESSES OF DECAY ARE ESTABLISHED, ACCORDING TO VARIOUS DEFINITIONS OF DAMAGE.

2) EPIDEMIOLOGY OF COMPLEX STONE DECAY :

A COMPLETE AND COMPLEX STONE STRUCTURE, REGENT HOUSE AT TRINITY COLLEGE, WILL BE EXAMINED IN DETAIL AND THE TYPES OF DECAY, MECHANISMS AND MICROCLIMATE EVALUATED.
