Objetivo
ELUCIDATION OF BASIC BIOLOGICAL AND CHEMICAL PROCESSES IN GROUDWATER AQUIFERS AND IN THE TOP SOIL, WHICH WILL DELIVER THE PARAMETERS NECESSARY FOR RISK ASSESSMENT OF THE USE OF PESTICIDES. DEVELOPMENT AND VALIDATION OF A NEW FIELD METHOD WHICH WILL REDUCE THE NEED FOR LARGE SCALE FIELD MONITORING.
MAIN ASPECTS:
- ADSORPTION OF SELECTED PESTICIDES ON SUBSURFACE SOILS AND TOP SOILS.
- (BIO)TRANSFORMATION OF PESTICIDES AS INFLUENCED BY TOP SOIL AND AQUIFER (I.E. CONDITIONS OF LOW OXYGEN CONCENTRATION, LOW REDOX POTENTIAL, LOW MICROBIAL BIOMASS AND LOW PESTICIDE CONCENTRATION).
- POSSIBLE ADAPTATION OF SUBSURFACE MICROBIAL POPULATIONS TO PESTICIDES.
- ASSESSMENT OF THE RISK OF CONTAMINATION OF DRINKING WATER WELLS WITH THE HELP OF COMPUTER SIMULATION MODELS.
THE PROJECT WILL CONSIST OF TWO PARTS:
1) ESTIMATION OF BASIC PARAMETERS OF DEGRADATION AND ADSORPTION PROCESSES IN THE LABORATORY.
2) FURTHER DEVELOPMENT OF AN IN SITU METHOD FOR GROUNDWATER AND VERIFICATION OF THE PARAMETERS OBTAINED FOR GROUNDWATER UNDER 1) IN THE FIELD.
