Objective
TO DEVELOP A METHODOLOGY WHICH WILL BE USED AS A STRATEGY FOR IMPLEMENTING REAL CASE STUDIES OF TRACE METAL POLLUTANT MOBILITY IN GROUNDWATER.
THE AIM OF THIS PROPOSAL IS TO DEVELOP A METHODOLOGY, BASED ON 3 MAIN OPERATIONAL TOOLS OF INVESTIGATION, WHICH WILL SERVE AS A STRATEGY FOR IMPLEMENTING REAL CASE STUDIES OF TRACE METAL POLLUTANT MOBILITY IN GROUNDWATER. THE THREE TOOLS OF INVESTIGATION ARE :
- A METHOD, AS GENERAL AS POSSIBLE, TO IDENTIFY AND QUANTIFY THE KEY PROCESSES OF SOIL/WATER INTERACTION;
- MODELS CAPABLE OF USING THE DATA ACQUIRED FOR THE PREDICTION OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF POLLUTANTS UNDER VARIOUS SITUATIONS;
- ANALOG SUBSTANCES, WEAKLY TOXIC AND POORLY RETAINED BUT PRESENTING SURFACE INTERACTIONS OF THE SAME NATURE AS THE POLLUTANT TO BE INVESTIGATED. THESE ANALOGS COULD THUS BE STUDIED IN FIELD EXPERIMENTS AND THEY WOULD PERMIT THE SCALING UP OF LABORATORY INVESTIGATIONS OF TOXIC ELEMENTS TO FIELD CONDITIONS.
GENERAL PROGRAMME
THE DEVELOPMENT OF THIS METHODOLOGY WILL BE CARRIED OUT USING CHROMIUM WITH POSSIBLE EXTENSION TO OTHER HEAVY METALS SUCH AS CD AND HG.
1. GEOCHEMICAL AND HYDROLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF FIELD SITES.
2.1. LABORATORY EXPERIMENTS (BATCH AND COLUMN)
2.2. IDENTIFICATION OF ANALOG SUBSTANCES AND COMPARISON IN THE LABORATORY OF THEIR TRANSFER WITH THAT OF CR
3. CONCEPTION OF FIELD EXPERIMENTS
4. FIELD EXPERIMENTS ON AT LEAST TWO SITES AND MODEL VALIDATION
5. PRESENTATION OF MODEL CAPABILITIES (VARIOUS SCENARIOS).
