Aircraft measurement of stratospheric trace species during the EASOE campaign 1991/1992

Objetivo

Aircraft Measurement of Stratospheric Trace Species During the EASOE Campaign 1991/92
We propose to perform aircraft- balloon- and ground-based measurements to determine the horizontal and vertical distribution of a wide variety of trace species (ozone, halogen compounds oxides of nitrogen) in the Arctic stratosphere. Special attention will be given to processes playing a role in stratospheric ozone depletion, like chemical reactions in polar stratospheric clouds (PSC). Aircrafts are able to follow the position of the chemically disturbed air masses, thus aircraft based instruments allow to make observations "where the action is", compared to ground based observations much fewer instruments can map the area of interest including the air above the Arctic sea. Aircraft experiments are, therefore, an indispensable complement to ground based and balloon measurements.
The ground based component of this proposal includes LIDAR, microwave and UV/visible spectrometers as well as balloon sondes to monitor the variability of stratospheric ozone. The techniques are complementary to each other, for instance the Uv/vis. spectrometer (DOAS) measurements will also determine total column amounts of NO2, BrO, and OClO.
Complementing the experimental effort two computer models of the stratosphere will be available at the base airport (i.e. in Kiruna) for immediate on-site evaluation of measurement results.
PART 1

stratospheric waves for analysis of PSC formation processes. 6. D. Perner/MPI Mainz: (a) Ground based Uv/vis. spectoscopic determination of O3, NO2, BrO, OClO, NO3 by differential optical absorption spectroscopy. (b) Field installation of photochemical and circulation models for on-site mission planning and analysis.
As already discussed with Prof. Platt, Dr. Harris, and Dr. Büsing (EC), the updated version of our proposal has now 95.000 ECU under consumables (increase by 35.000 ECU). The reson for this is the following :
In January 1991, we have carried out a test flight of our automatic mass spectrometer(same instrument which we intend to fly on aircraft in EASOE) on a balloon at Kiruna. The test was very succesful as far as the flight is concerned. The mass spectrometer worked nominal and excellent data were obtained. Unfortunately, however, the instrument suffered from very serious damaged. The repair work costs approximately 35.000 ECU. In addition, we plan test flights of the repaired instrument in April 1991 aboard the DLR Research Aircraft Falcon, which will cost about 50.000 ECU. These unexpected additional costs which will be covered by the MPI-K, Heidelberg, do not allow to support our planned FALCON - Aircraft - Activities with MPI-K-money. Therefore, in this difficult situation, we should like to apply for the above additional 35.000 ECU from the E.C.
