Integrated modelling of the management of (crowd) evacuation from hazardous situations

Objectif

To develp existing knowledge and modelling to provide a methodology and an aid for the assessement of the ability of structures and systems to deal with complex evacutation scenarios, taking human and management response as the core of the methodology.

There have been a number of recent multi-fatality disasters in Europe that have raised considerable concern about safety management among the public, politicians and industry alike. These tragic losses of life illustrate the crucial importance of adequate escape or evacuation procedures and systems in working and public areas where hazards may occur. However, one of the most problematical issues in design of such structures and in the management or the assessment of their safety, is the analysis of these evacuation provisions and procedures. This will be achieved by collecting and reviewing data from past incidents and the formulation of models for human behavioural response, movement and management of the situation. The final stage of the project will formulate a specification for an integrated methodology and tool.

Benefits from the project will be the ability to improve people safety by understanding factors that affect designs and modifications to crowded structures in addition, participation of operators and regulators will be sought to guide the project and in order that knowledge obtained can rapidly be assimilated and used.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
