The cultural and economic conditions of decision-making for the sustainable city

Objetivo

The project addresses the issue of the sustainable urban development and aims at providing guidance to policy-makers on the achievement of sustainability through the control and the influence of the planning process. In particular it analyses the ways in which the decision making processes of the main actors contribute to or frustate the achievements of the goal of sustainability and identify how policy makers may best use planning instruments to alter decision making processes in order to achieve this goal.

The research focuses on three pairs of matched cities in Italy and the U.K. : Manchester and Turin, Edinburgh and Florence and Leicester and Bologna. Three urban policies, Traffic Restraint and Control and Retail Location and Green Space Management are analysed in each city.

It consists of two main parts:

i) an extensive review of the concept of "sustainable development";

ii) the analysis of the three chosen urban policies through the review of policy tools and the interviews with selected key actors within the decision making groups.

A comparative analysis draws out the main conclusions of the projects.

The project has been selected for additional funding under the PECO Programme. The project includes partners from Hungary, Slovenia and the Czech Republic.
