Objetivo The aim of this project is to provide a methodology forreconstructing the physical characteristics of an eruption fromthe ejected fragments. This approach can provide a means forassessing the past and potential eruptive behaviour of diversetypes of volcano to be found in the EEC countries.The work will be carried out in the following steps:Fieldwork to collect ejecta from eruptions with different magmacompositions from different volcanoes (Santorini, GR; Teide, S;Laacher See, D; Vesuvius, I).Density determinations and image analysis from two-dimensionalsections will be carried out to characterize the bubble contentand geometry.Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy on glassy samples,scanning calorimetry and dilatometry measurements will be carriedout to study the kinetics of gas exsolution and to reconstructtheir temperature -time paths-.Laboratory experiments on the extrusion of foams and thefragmentation of liquids will be carried and theoretical modelsdeveloped to elucidate the basic physical mechanisms involved infragmentation.These models will be tested using the geological data.
