Storms, Floods and Radar Hydrology

Objetivo

To make radar rainfall data a more reliable and robust
measurement of rainfall for use in flood forecasting and control
in both rural and urban hydrological environments. To make
available rainfall forecasts, better than currently available, to
extend the lead time of flood forecasts. To enable the use of
radar measurements and forecasts of rainfall fields for input to
flood forecasting and control systems in rural and urban areas.
To develop design methods for the sizing of reservoir spillways
and drainage system using the potential of incorporating weather
radar into the design process.

Rainfall Measurement and Forecasting: Groups in France and the
Netherlands will focus on assessing the value of different radar
wavelengths (X-, C-, and S-band) for rainfall measurement. They
will collaborate on the development of a point (1-D) rainfall
model, 2-D rainfall simulations will be jointly carried out by
the University Polytechnic of Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain and the
French Group.

Vertical Reflectivity Profile Studies: the University of Salford will deploy a
mobile, very high resolution, X-band vertical profiling radar (VPR) in the
UK, and in the experimental region of the French and possibly German
projects.

Radar rainfall measurement in convective storms: the University of Lancaster
will focus on rainfall estimation in convective storms, using data from the
Hameldon Hill radar scanning a hilly area of North-West England, this will
be supplemented by studies of convective storms, using radars in other parts
of the UK, southern France and Italy.

Doppler and dual-polarisation radar for radar hydrology: the University of
Reading group will concentrate on the difficulty that conventional radars have
in measuring flood-inducing high rainfall which derives from a mixture of rain
and hail.

Rainfall forecasting: classical tracking techniques based on an underlying
advection model will be assessed and developed, particularly by the
Portuguese and Greek groups. More physically-based approaches are being
investigated by the French and Institute of Hydrology groups.

Flood Forecasting: the main ingredient of this initiative is the
combination of distributed grid-square radar rainfall data, used
as model input, with digital terrain, river network and
soil/landuse data and GIS techniques used to support the
structural definition and parameterisation of the rainfall-runoff
model. This work is being undertaken by the Italian, Slovenian
and Institute of Hydrology groups.

Design Flood Estimation: consists in the extension of previous
studies on the use of radar for design flood estimation and new
work on rainfall parameterization in large scale models for flood
impact assessment.

Urban Applications: the ultimate goal of the German and French
project is the control of flooding in urban drainage systems and
both have a major interest in the use of scanning X-band radar
for such applications.
