The role of colloids in the transport of pollutants in shallow groundwatersdeveloment of monitoring and assessment procedures

Objectif

To determine the role of colloids in contaminant transport at several shallow groundwater sites both in the UK and Germany studying the (1) development of a cost effective sampling and analytical protocol for characterisation of polluted sites; (2) development of effective guidelines for recognition of significance of colloids in the transport of colloid-associated heavy metal transport; (3) assessment of implications of colloidal heavy metal transport for remediation strategies.

The programme consists of the following seven tasks :

Task 1 : collection of existing data into an effective data base.

Task 2 : field monitoring and sampling of waters, colloids and solids

Task 3 : geophysical characterisation of the sites.

Task 4 : sample analysis and physico-chemical characterisation of groundwater colloids

Task 5 : laboratory studies of metal-associated colloid transport through relevant solid matrix materials in column and batch experiments.

Task 6 : modelling of contaminant transport in the presence of colloids.

Task 7 : project coordination, reporting and recommendations.
