Objective
To measure degradation rates of organic chemicals in waste disposal sites and in groundwater employing both in situ methods and laboratory methods in order to make a scientific comparison of these two approaches and to provide a scientific basis for : (i) the evaluation of the risks associated with organic chemicals purposely or accidentally released into waste disposal sites or groundwater; (ii) assessing pollution plumes and designing remedial action at abandoned waste disposal sites; and (iii) development of methods for testing waste intended for landfilling (e.g. in accordance with EEC Landfilling Directives).
The project will address five problems :
o The influence that particle surfaces have on the degradation rates of organic chemicals in groundwater under anaerobic conditions (to be investigated in a series of laboratory experiments).
o Correlation of degradation rates of xenobiotic organic compounds with measurements of microbial biomass and activity under aerobic and anaerobic conditions in laboratory set-ups.
o Comparison of degradation rates of xenobiotic organic groundwater pollutants in unconsolidated sediments in in situ microcosms and in laboratory set-ups under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
o Development of a "borehole-microcosm" for determining degradation rates of organic chemicals in consolidated sediments under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.
o Determination of organic chemical degradation rates in methanogenic waste disposal sites by means of an "artificial borehole-microcosm".
