Soil and water quality as affected by agrochemicals under different soil tillage systems

Objetivo

To determine the role of site characteristics and of tillage practices on the displacement of pesticides and nutrient elements in soils under temperate humid and Mediterranean climates.

The project consists of field experiments in Germany, Italy and Portugal involving three different tillage practices: traditional tillage, reduced tillage and zero tillage. Crops will be maize, winter wheat, sorghum and tomatoes.
Soil physical, chemical and biological properties are being measured, as well as crop yield and labor and energy requirements of tillage.
Phospherous and nitrogen, and the herbicides triazine, phenylmea, glyphosate and metriseuron and their degradation products are analysed in soil and in ground- and surface water. Samples will be taken right after the application of the agrochemicals and for periods of at least 90 days.
A precipitation/run off model and a landscape/material balance model will be used to model the pathway of agrochemicals in the field. A GIS will serve for the registration, correction and evaluation of all spatial input data in order to apply the models to a particular section of the landscape.
