Volvi-thessaloniki: a european test site for engineering, seismology, earthquake engineering and seismology

Objetivo

To establish, near Thessaloniki, a European test site for
Engineering Seismology, Earthquake Engineering and Seismology.
To produce at this test site for a long period of time a high-
quality instrumental in-situ data, so that they can ground valid
tests and checks of methods currently used in Engineering
seismology and Earthquake Engineering and calibrate new methods
to be developed.

There is an urgent need to establish in Europe a few test-sites for engineering seismology earthquake engineering and seismology. The basic aim is to collect instrumental in-situ data, which are extremely well controlled (regardug their seismological, geological, geotechnical and structural backgrounds) so that they can ground valid tests and checks of methods already currently used in engineering seismology (prediction of ground motion, site effects, including geological and topographic irregularities) and earthquake engineering (concerning building behaviour, soil structure interaction, lifeline problems etc.), and calibrate new methods to be developed.
Such test-sites have to be instrumented as densely as possible for many years and to be familiar as precisely as possible from a geological and geotechnical point of view, based on a dense and high quality geological, geophysical and geotechnical survey. They need to be located in a seismically active area in the immediate proximity of a seismological and geotechnical centre so that maintenance can be achieved.
The Volvi-Thessaloniki area fits very well to these requirements and the present proposal intends to provide the basic studies and instrumentation for the establishment in this area of the first European Test SITE, where the prior aim will be the generation for a long period of high quality database from weak and strong motion measurements, that will be extremely useful for the improving of methods, estimating the site effects and the seismic behaviour of buildings.
The basic outline of the activities to be carried out is the following: 1. Improvement of the local permanent seismological network, in order to improve primarily the hypocenter location and the estimation of focal mechanisms.
2. Processing of the seismological data from the permanent network. 3. Temporary seismic and geodetic (GPS) survey of the Volvi area, whose aim is the very precise determination of earthquakes occuring in the vicinity, the investigation of the non-linear behaviour of surficial sediments, the estimation of the wave field and the measurement of site effects for many events.
