Objective
The aim of the research project is to develop guidelines for the designer which systematically sum up the criteria, guidelines and standards for the environmentally sound construction and evaluation of complex products.
The project consists of the following :
i) an inventorying and valuation of the existing weaknesses in the disposal of complex products and an analysis of the existing approaches to ecologically oriented design ;
ii) the development of criteria for the design and evaluation of environmentally desirable products looking at :
- the aggregate of environmental and disposal problems during the whole life cycle of the product from design, to the use of the recycled substances and waste disposal;
- an environmentally desirable product design ;
- the requirements for the installation of closed cycles and the minimization of harmful substances at the product design stage.
iii) The criteria are elaborated and tested in case studies with construction and design departments of SMEs and larger companies working on complex products (TVs , etc.). On the basis of this experience, generalised design criteria are derived and a manual which can be used as a tool for product design produced.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
