Climate Change and Extreme Events : Altered Risk, Socio-Economic Impacts and Policy Responses

Exploitable results

A methodology was developed to study the impact of changes in weather hazards due to climatic changes. Soil subsidence, agricultural drought, river floods, health and heat waves, and wind storms were addressed in Western Europe, and tropical cyclones in Fiji. Results indicate that Europe is not particularly vulnerable to weather hazards, with a possible exception of water-related hazards. Adaptation of current management practices is key. The insurance sector can adapt rapidly, but is likely to shift increased weather risks to the insured, or their governments. Tropical islands are vulnerable to changes in cyclone risk.
