Objetivo
To generate a first quality data archive of atmospheric
temperature in the height range 5-60 km to study the influence of
natural variability and to identify and quantify the
anthropogenic changes which occurred in the last decades.
THE AIM OF THIS PROJECT IS TO GENERATE A FIRST QUALITY DATA ARCHIVES OF ATMOSPHERIC TEMPERATURE IN THE HEIGHT RANGE 5-80 KM, IN ORDER TO STUDY THE INFLUENCE OF NATURAL VARIABILITY AND TO IDENTIFY AND QUALITY THE ANTHROPOGENIC CHANGES WHICH OCCURRED IN THE ATMOSPHERIC TEMPERATURE IN THE LAST DECADES.
THE DATASET GENERATED BY THE SIX GROUPS INVOLVED IN THIS PROPOSAL ARE COMPLEMENTARY AND COVER ALL THE EXISTING TYPES OF DATA : SATELLITES, IN-SITU AND LIDAR MEASUREMENTS. ONE OF THE OUTPUT OF THE WORK, WHICH STARTED WITH THE EPOC 0001 PROJECT, AND WILL BE CONTINUED WITH THIS PROPOSAL IS THE CONSTITUTION OF EUROPEAN DATA ARCHIVES OF HIGH QUALITY AND THEIR SCIENTIFIC USE TO STUDY VARIABILITY AND TRENDS.
THE DETERMINATION OF ANTHROPOGENIC TRENDS CLEARLY IMPLIES A BETTER UNDERSTANDIG OF THE NATURAL SOURCES OF VARIABILITY (SOLAR ACTIVITY, VOLCANIC ERUPTION, INTERNAL FORCING, LIKE THE QBO, THE SOUTHERN OSCILLATION...) BECAUSE THE VARIABILITY THEY GENERATE NEEDS TO BE REMOVED OR SMOOTHED OUT FROM THE DATASET. SUCH STUDIES ARE IN PROGRESS IN SEVERAL OF THE GROUPS INVOLVED IN THIS PROPOSAL.
UNDERSTANDING OF THESE DIFFERENT FORCINGS WILL BENEFIT FROM A GLOBAL APPROACH OF THE WHOLE ATMOSPHERE FROM THE TROPOPAUSE TO THE MESOPAUSE, AND FROM POLE TO POLE.
THE FACT THAT THE OZONE DEPLETION OCCURED PARTLY BELOW 20 KM, WHEREAS IT WAS EXPECTED TO OCCUR MOSTLY AROUND 40 KM, IMPLIES THAT ONE PRIORITY OF THE PROJECT WILL BE TO REANALYSE THE DATA OBTAINED IN THIS LOWER RANGE. SUCH DATA EXIST SINCE MORE THAN 3 DECADES WITH THE RADIOSONDE AND SINCE MORE THAN ONE DECADE WITH SATELLITE DATA, BUT THEY NEED TO BE LOOKED AT WITH MORE SOPHISTICATED MEANS. THE PARTICIPANTS IN THIS PROPOSAL ARE WORLD EXPERTS IN THOSE ASPECTS, EITHER BECAUSE THEY GENERATE THEIR OWN DATASET OR HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE DEVELOPPEMENT OF IMPROVED ALGORITHMS AND THE USE OF NEW DATA ASSIMILATION TECHNICS WHICH ARE UNIQUE IN THE WORLD. THE DATA ANALYSES WILL BE COMPLEMENTED WITH'A MODELLING ACTIVITY.
