Objectif
The seismic integrity of many important civil engineering installations is dependent on their risk exposure to long period ground motion. Included among these are lifelines, storage facilities and tall buildings (including those of cultural interest). In order to establish the level of long period exposure in Europe, the following four tasks are proposed: (1) The empirical long period study of selected high-quality seismograms recorded at seismological stations in Europe. These provide direct information on the amplitude and frequency content of past ground motion. (2) The numerical simulation of long period ground motion, generated as a superposition of seismic wave propagation modes. Results should serve to help characterize seismic source properties.
(3) Geotechnical analysis of soil amplification effects at low frequencies, using methods which mathematically represent the surface waves which dominate long period hazard.
(4) Assessment of earthquake effects on long period structures, including pipelines and tall structures of historical or artistic interest.
These four tasks cover the main areas of earthquake engineering, as applied to long period hazard. The coordination of the above observational and numerical techniques should clarify significantly a mode of seismic hazard exposure which is currently poorly defined.
