Crop reflectance operational models for agriculture (CROMA)

The goal of the CROMA research project goes far beyond the current usage of empirical indices for EO applications in agriculture: it promotes the concept of advanced and generic crop reflectance models, coupled with crop customisation mechanisms, to generate biophysical maps of crop fields, and analyses the further incorporation of remote sensing information into agronomic and crop simulation models, developing the appropriate calibrations and forcing methods.

The crop case that will be addressed as illustration is maize crop, including the definition and prototyping of recommendation products that can demonstrate immediate and measurable benefit of operational EO applications. In order to meet this goal, the project team brings together the forces of experts and recognised specialists in the different domains, both in science and applied agronomic research, with those of major remote sensing actors.
Most partners plan to publish their results in international reviews related to the remote sensing of environment. Some results have already been presented at international meetings, and new international presentations will occur in the near future. After publication, those results will be at the public disposal. In particular, the models developed by the TO are at the public disposal. Those developed by the NLR will be downloadable from their web site. The new models and the whole methodology leading to crop recommendation products will be used very soon in several projects dedicated to precision farming (in particular for maize) and environmental monitoring. Some results will be used to derive biophysical products for large swath sensors. The results on the sensor performance analyses could be used to concretise future plans for the building of a superspectral sensor dedicated to agriculture. Most CROMA partners plan to further improve the obtained results.
