Development of innovative devices for seismic protection of petrochemical facilities

Objective

The objective is to reduce the seismic risks at petrochemical facilities through the development and application of new anti-seismic devices to critical structures such as cylindrical/spherical tanks and non-ductile concrete frames.
The new devices would solve specific issues such as:
1) lack of isolation systems independent from the mass associated to liquid level inside tanks;
2) lack of low-cost, light weight new isolators;
3) "compensation" of high displacements of an isolated structure, to avoid piping overstresses;
4) criticality of non-ductile concrete frames. The new devices will be mass-independent isolators, fibre-reinforced rubber isolators and antiseismic flexible joints. They will be manufactured and studied through analyses and tests, both in full scale and on mock-ups.
