Objective
The objective of the project is to develop cost-effective technology for treatment of paper mill process water at the source in the mill, with such efficiency that treated water can be reused in the mill, replacing fresh water. The expected result is new technology, making possible effluent-free paper production. The technology is to be based on biological treatment optimised for the conditions set by paper production. Bio treatment is followed by biomass separation, using different technologies depending on how low biomass concentration in the reused water is required for the paper quality produced. If removal of colour or smell is needed, polishing with ozone will be done. An automatic control system for dosing of nutrients to the bioprocess will be developed. Optimisation of process configuration and design will be based on tests of paper quality and studies of the microbiology in the process water system when reusing treated water.

Topic(s)
Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Funding Scheme
Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
