Objective
The project will research and develop an improved system of sewage treatment that can be configured in a compact form for use in marine environments. This will overcome problems that are caused by effluent from small-scale domestic sewage plants and from boats, particularly in and around marinas. Current treatment methods cause a degradation of water quality and affect resource areas such as shellfish beds. Sewage discharges represent a potential health threat to bathers and a threat to the environment. In many regions it is illegal to discharge raw sewage and there are legal requirements to fit vessels with approved Marine Sanitation Devices (MSD). The difficulty of policing this situation will be greatly alleviated by equipping all vessels with effective on-board treatments systems to guarantee the purity of effluent fluids.
