Objective
This study is submitted as an Accompanying Measure. Increased prosperity and environmental concern have led to waste disposal problems in urban areas, compounded in Southern Europe by seasonal water shortages. The proposal concept is to use the energy consequent of waste transformation for desalination. The technology also offers major market potential for European equipment in developing arid regions of the world. Although straightforward, the concept has been little explored. Preliminary estimates by the co-ordinator support its viability. Funding is requested to enable appropriate partners to effect recommendations for a prototype design. The proposal brings together waste incineration and desalination equipment manufacturers, a university research group, a South Europe SME, and an Egyptian group which, while not eligible for finance, recognises the Middle Eastern potential. The study will be completed in 18 months.
