Application of enzymatic technology in sludge drying

Objective

Large amounts of sludge results from wastewater treatments, becoming the disposal of these sledges one of the major problems that the wastewater treatment plants have to deal. The amount of water present on the sludge requires higher areas for its disposal, which in many cases are not available. The transport of the sludge, with high content of water, to facilities where its possible to disposal or to treat, increases the treatment costs. The transport, disposal and treatment costs would be reduced significantly if the water content of the sludge has been reduced previously. Although the existent processes allow the removal of the free water that is present in the sludge, the "dried" sludge still remains with 15 to 20% of the water that is linked to the solid materials. The break of the cellular tissues is a pre-requisite to facilitate the removal of this interstitial water. Enzymatic technologies, through the use of specific/selected enzymes, can be applied to promote the rupture of the cell tissues. The objective of this project is to define and selected appropriates enzymes and to establish an optimised process for its application in wastewater treatment plants.

Fields of science (EuroSciVoc)

CORDIS classifies projects with EuroSciVoc, a multilingual taxonomy of fields of science, through a semi-automatic process based on NLP techniques. See: The European Science Vocabulary.

Programme(s)

Multi-annual funding programmes that define the EU’s priorities for research and innovation.

Topic(s)

Calls for proposals are divided into topics. A topic defines a specific subject or area for which applicants can submit proposals. The description of a topic comprises its specific scope and the expected impact of the funded project.

Call for proposal

Procedure for inviting applicants to submit project proposals, with the aim of receiving EU funding.

Funding Scheme

Funding scheme (or “Type of Action”) inside a programme with common features. It specifies: the scope of what is funded; the reimbursement rate; specific evaluation criteria to qualify for funding; and the use of simplified forms of costs like lump sums.
