Objective
IPCC 95 states that the most urgent scientific problem requiring attention to determine the rate and magnitude of climate change and sea level rise are the factors controlling the Distribution of clouds and their radiative characteristics. Clouds are now represented in Models by prognostic variables and there is an urgent need for validation. This proposal is to optimise a network of three pre-existing sites for observing cloud profiles with radar and lidar and retrieving the variables such as cloud water and particle size for comparison with the Prognostic variables held in operational models, leading to the definition of instruments and algorithms for GCOS cloud remote sensing stations to monitor cloud properties over Europe.
