Development of a real time in situ observing system in the north atlantic ocean, by an array of lagrangian profiling floats (GYROSCOPE)

Objetivo

This project will develop a European component of a global in site observing system of ocean variability in the North Atlantic. A pilot array of 80 autonomous profiling floats will be deployed, to transmit in real time data on temperature, salinity, and velocity. This array will support several objectives: operational real-time ocean forecasts; ocean model initialisation and assessment; understanding and monitoring ocean variability. A Data Centre will collect, quality control and transmit the data in real time on the Global Telecommunication System, for use by National Weather Services and operational agencies; it will archive and distribute validated data. The data will be used to estimate the thermohaline circulation, water mass formation, and the heat balance of the North Atlantic ocean, on a seasonal to inter-annual basis. Recommendations for implementation of an operational ocean observing system will be made.
