Climatological database for the world's oceans 1750-1850 (CLIWOC)

Objective

Logbooks prepared by officers of vessels in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries contain daily observations of weather conditions at sea. Many thousand such books are preserved in the archives of Britain, The Netherlands, France, Spain and Argentina. The geography of these nation’s imperial past ensures that Previous studies indicate that the data provide reliable estimates of wind force and direction and other weather conditions. This proposal will abstract these data to produce a global oceanic climatic database for the 1750-1850 periods. The data will be freely available; its dissemination is a major part of the proposal. It will extend the scientific knowledge of oceanic climates by a century and link with COADS database that starts in 1850. Interpretation of the data will improve our understanding of the climatic change.
