Objective The exploratory project has to set the basis for a successful application for an R&D-project in the field of alleviating consequences of seismic hazards and improve earthquake resistance of existing structures. Recent seismic events brought severe damage to houses of poor concrete strength and insufficient reinforcernent. New developments in ultrasonic or impact testing of structural concrete and in reinforcement detection have a potential to be advanced into a user friendly tool to give indicators for both insufficient concrete strength and reinforcement. This tool must be usable by anyone concerned. In the exploratory phase partners for the development of the device will be gathered and also partners for a validation on a site including the technical/administrative environment for the establishment of the necessary consequences of the test results - i.e. technical and financial solutions for seismic strength improvement.
