Time series of upper free troposphere observations from a european ground-based ftir network

Objectif

UFTIR integrates existing time series of ground-based remote sensing measurements by Fetor spectrometers with model studies, for investigating long-term changes of greenhouse gases (GHG) and 0_3 precursors in the troposphere. The target gases are N_2O, CH_4, 0_3, HCFC-22, CO, C_2H_6. UFTIR addresses changes in the chemical composition of the free troposphere and climate change over Europe. Understanding these changes, especially in the upper free troposphere, is indispensable to predict the future evolution of stratospheric O_3. UFTIR will thus contribute to the scientific verification of national and EU climate change strategies, and the Kyoto and Montreal Protocols and Amendments, paving the way towards sustainable development. All instruments involved are operated as part of the NDSC. To achieve the objectives, a new FTIR retrieval strategy will be developed and implemented in the UFTIR network. UFTIR will deliver time series of the target troposphere and stratospheric column abundances, quantitative trend estimates of the troposphere abundances, and improved model assessments of GHG evolutions. It supports upcoming troposphere satellite missions.
