Stratigraphical development of the glaciated european margin

Objectif

Problems to be solved
STRATAGEM addresses problems related to the mid-Cenozoic to Recent development of the glaciated European margin from northern Norway to central Ireland. A key issue for both academia and the oil industry is the need for a margin-wide stratigraphical framework that will allow geologists throughout Europe to use a common terminology for sedimentary units. STRATAGEM aims to produce a framework that will be valuable to end-users for some time in the future. The culmination of the project will be the development of a Margin Evolution Model to assess the interactions of sedimentary processes that have produced the character of the present day margin.
Scientific objectives and approach
The project is based on expert skills in seismic interpretation and sedimentological and biostratigraphical analysis. The seismic data to be interpreted will comprise existing data held by the partners, new data to be acquired in STRATAGEM, and data that are either already promised or will be sought from industry. Similarly, existing sample, well and borehole data will be studies together with new sources such as IMAGES cores. The seismic data will be analysed to identify regionally significant disconformities surfaces bounding stratal packages; these packages will be mapped and, where possible, dated from sampled sediment. In this way, and by studying the whole European glaciated margin, we shall establish a margin-wide stratigraphic framework, and, as far as possible, define a common terminology. Both in conjunction with, and following on from, the development of this stratigraphy, we shall produce a Margin Evolution Model for the European glaciated margin. This model will be the culmination of STRATAGEM and, by including comparative studies with other glaciated margins; it will incorporate the combined knowledge and experience of the consortium in margin studies. The model will address a number of scientific and practical problems related to European margin development. These will include the age and distribution of major Plio-Pleistocene depocentres, the southernmost extent of glaciers that reached the shelfbreak, the influence and age of glacial erosion of the outer shelf, the timing and influence of oceanic currents since the mid-Cenozoic, the timing and distribution of palaeoslides, and the extent and influence of Neogene vertical movements on the margin and its hinterland.
Expected impacts
The end products of the study will be of considerable benefit to the oil industry in Europe; it will help to reduce production costs as well as contribute to a safer offshore working environment and improved environmental protection. Improved success for the industry will benefit national economies and enhance employment opportunities in the EU.

Champ scientifique (EuroSciVoc)
