Objective The aim of IGLOO is to develop instrumentation for the remote platforms envisaged in the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS) program and in particular the European initiative within the program (EUROGOOS). From the GOOS scientists' point of view, good quality data are essential, from thousands of remote stations with a long-term target lifetime for the platforms of years. From the viewpoint of those financing GOOS this aim must be achieved as economically as possible. How compatible are the two? The project will focus on developing key parameter sensors that give GOOS scientists:a) good quality data;b) long term stability;c) consume minimum amounts of power;d) at the lowest possible cost. The idea is to bring together EU laboratories and SMEs to produce novel compact sensor suites to service the ambitions of GOOS.
