New additives to prevent migration of foreign species contained in ballast water and harmful effects of antifouling paints containing tributyltin

Objective

Europe is facing a huge environmental problem in preserving the ocean and river ecosystems. Firstly, ships travelling around the world introduce non indigenous and harmful organisms and microorganisms contained in ballast water. This causes major risks to the preservation of ecosystems and the sustainable use of coastal resources. Secondly, hull protecting chemical (tributyltin or TBT) contained in anti fouling paints for ships have been found to cause severe environmental damage to non target organisms (marine species). Therefore, the objective of the proposed project is to develop a new range of non toxic additives to introduce in paints and ballast capable of solving these two majors and linked problems in killing harmful organisms.
