Characterisation of the baltic sea ecosystem: dynamics and function of coastal types

Objective

We address the implementation of the EC Water Framework Directive in the Baltic Sea ecoregion. The project intends to develop, test and validate a methodological approach to characterize type areas of the Baltic Sea coastal zone. In order to develop a common methodology for establishing coastal types it is necessary to identify key factors for ecosystem functioning, quantitative ecological relationships and empirical models to describe relations between anthropogenic pressures and key indicators. Based on the developed typology and key indicators ecological relevant reference conditions and recommendations for a novel monitoring strategy for the Baltic Sea coastal ecosystems will be made.

Programme(s)
