Objective The purpose of the ANAXIMANDER project is to perform the delicate sampling of methane containing sediments and associated gas hydrate sites in the Eastern Mediterranean with a state of the art instrumentation, and to study the associated fluids and gas and the deep biosphere (bacteria) related to production of methane and/or to dissociation of gas hydrates. The field data will be studied in the laboratories by using the most modern technology, in order to develop the correct models of the various parameters that comprise the gas hydrate environment and to answer the relevant questions that have been up to now unanswered about the hydrate environment.
