A regional capacity building and networking programme to upgrade monitoring and forecasting activity in the black sea basin

Objective

The health and well being of 162 million people are affected by the environmental degradation in the Black Sea, which is known to be the most severe among the various basins of the World Ocean. Consequently, adequate prediction of the environmental variability in the Black Sea is needed to identify, analyse and determine the costs of solutions for better management of the marine environment aimed for sustainable development of the Black Sea resources. Furthermore, the environmental management of the Black Sea and the related scientific and technological developments require a Data-Base Management System aiming an operational and forecasting system aware of end users needs. Therefore, this proposal aims to initiate a co-operative ocean programme to assess and identify the Black Sea resources, the needs for operational oceanography, to formulate a Data-Base Management System and build capacity.
