Strategies for temporary uses - potential for development of urban residual areas in european metropolises (URBAN CATALYSTS)

Objetivo

Centrally located residual areas are increasingly important to the urban development of European cities. Revitalizing these wastelands is often economically or politically difficult. In spite of this, numerous unplanned uses emerge in these spaces. They often evolve into intensively used public and semi-public spaces, and become the starting point for many new service and media enterprises. The aim of "Urban Catalysts" is to examine strategies for temporary use and to develop instruments and methods that integrate its potential into modern city management and urban design. To this end, the project will develop and deploy an Internet-based communication system that is a marketable planning product for cities or developers interested in exploiting the potential of temporary use in residual urban areas.
All of the objectives set out were achieved. Important new data on how oligotrophic and mesotrophic ecosystems function during different seasonal conditions were collected. These data have been synthesised, where practicval, into models that show how the systems function. Major papers are in preparation and a few already published. In addition 8 Ph.D.s and 6 M.Scs were completed as a result of KEYCOP funding.
