Objectif Municipal solid waste within the European Union presents a formidable problem, with over 200M tonnes of waste being produced annually and requiring treatment. The work proposed by the Consortium of SMEs in this project is aimed at providing a viable alternative to landfill and incineration for a significant percentage of municipal solid waste through the development of an Integrated Waste Recycling System (IWRS). The IWRS will have the capability to handle unsorted municipal solid waste. It is designed around several pieces of equipment that are commercially available, and whose performance as stand-alone items of plant is well characterised. The innovation of the approach proposed is through the integration of the equipment and processes, to produce a stand-alone waste-processing system capable of dealing with a range of municipal solid wastes. The IWRS is designed to yield products that are marketable commodities, and which would add value to the waste feedstock.
