Competitive metropolises economic transformation, labour market and competition in european agglomerations

Objective

The ongoing process of tertiarisation is the most remarkable development in the last decades on urban economies. Based on this fact, the COMET project will attempt to prove that competitiveness of Inner Cities deals with their multifunctional structure. While Inner Cities are increasingly marked by the relocation of large Parts of the service sector towards suburban areas and are being reduced at housing cultural functions, the processes of concentration, so typical for service structures in Inner Cities in the past, can be observed at the outskirts of urban agglomerations. New instruments for steering the necessary development processes have to be found. Basing on new perceptions, found by analysis and comparison of case studies, COMET would help to develop scenarios for multifunctional structures in agglomeration areas and job creation in competitive service branches.
