Improved damage assessments of parchments

Objectif

Parchments in the form of manuscripts, scrolls, charters, book covers etc. belong to the most valuable objects of European cultural heritage. The actual collections are large, present extensive conservation problems and contain important volumes with near-to-fatal damage. At the present no simple assessment system is available to give reliable in formation on the real state of deterioration of parchments. Through the correlation between the observed state of preservation and the measured condition, using complementary non-destructive and micro-analytical assessment, the cooperation between conservators-restorers and researchers will establish an improved visual parchment assessment system including an early warning system to detect latent fatal damages in the parchment structure and a parchment damage atlas which describes all significant damage characteristics.
